Learn How To Measure Your Car’s Horsepower

In Cathedral City there are numerous car advertisements specifying the amount of horsepower that a vehicle can produce. When you are researching a new vehicle, you may come across that specification often; but what does the term actually mean?

“Horsepower” is a term that is highly appropriate, as the definition literally interprets as the energy that is necessary for devices to move. In a motor vehicle, this measurement can be classified as either shaft or brake horsepower.

Brake horsepower is determined by the amount of force needed to stop a vehicle. On the other hand, shaft horsepower is computed by the force that is driven to an engine’s turbine shaft. Using a dynamometer, a car’s torque can be gauged. From this, horsepower is aggregated by multiplying torque by the engine’s speed, then dividing by 5252.

If you would like additional information on how horsepower works, or about our Lincoln vehicles, come to Palm Springs Lincoln and talk to us at your convenience. We will be delighted to help you!
